SUDAN-SOUTH-CONFLICT-FIGHTERS
TO GO WITH AFP STORY BY GUILLAUME LAVALLEE
Former Sudanese militia fighters attend a ceremony in the town of Al-Damazin, in the Blue Nile province, more than 500 km south of Khartoum on February 10, 2009, after completing a demilitarisation program designed to reintegrate militants into civilian life. The war in southern Sudan, causing two million deaths and four million displaced over two decades, ended four years ago and a first cohort of 15 soldiers and militiamen returned to civilian life at a ceremony in Al-Damazin on February 10, as part of the largest planned demilitarisation project in the world. Some 180,000 former fighters -- from north and south -- will pass through the Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration (DDR) programme, abandon their battle fatigues, and re-enter civilian life.
