CORRECTING DATE OF RESIGNATION --- Italy's centre-left leader Walter Veltroni delivers a speech on February 18, 2009 in Rome a day after having resigned as leader of the opposition. Veltroni, 53, resigned on February 17 after the Democratic Party (PD) candidate in a by-election for president of Sardinia suffered a humiliating loss.
