TO GO WITH AFP STORY BY ISABELLE WESSELINGH
A handout picture released by French Institute for Research and Development (IRD) based in Marseille, southeastern France, shows a "Black Soldier" adult fly (Hermetia illucens), whose larvae are used to produce an animal feed ingredient in a Bioconversion project headed by the IRD as part of the "Fishmeal replacement" program launched by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). This bioconversion process starts with the fermentation of palm kernel meal (PKM) whose smell attracts the insect Hermetia illucens to come and lay its eggs on it. The protein riched biomass obtained from the larvae after they consume PKM will be used to replace fish meal in experimental projects for Indonesian agrobusinesses. AFP PHOTO / IRD / SAURIN HEM
