IRELAND-US-POLITICS-OBAMA
TO GO WITH AFP STORY BY LOIC VENNIN
(FILES) A file picture taken on November 4, 2008 in Moneygall, Co Offaly, Ireland, shows Church of Ireland Rector Stephen Neill pointing out the name on the register book of births, marriages and funerals of an ancestor of US Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama at Templeharry church. The Irish village of Moneygall is little more than a cluster of houses served by two pubs and a road but it is hoping for a bright future thanks to its links to US President Barack Obama. There are no ruins to mark the spot but on a patch of grass in the middle of the village, a cobbler's shop owned by shoemaker Fulmuth Kearney once stood. When the Potato Famine devastated Ireland in the 1850s, Kearney joined thousands of his compatriots in fleeing the stench of death and emigrating to the United States in search of a better life. Kearney is the great-great-great-grandfather of Obama, although Moneygall only became aware of the fact two years ago. AFP PHOTO/Peter Muhly/FILES
