Workers constructing a new exhibit at the San Diego Zoo position a 10?-foot-tall Columbian mammoth sculpture into place on April 9, 2009. The 8,000-pound, life-size replica of a female mammoth is one of eight statues to have arrived April 9 after traveling from Wausau, Wisconsin. During their weeklong trip, the statues of animals from 12,000 years ago made public stops in Milwaukee, Las Vegas, Phoenix and Los Angeles. The sculptures will be featured in the Zoo?s Harry and Grace Steele Elephant Odyssey exhibit that opens to the public on May 23. The 7.5-acre Elephant Odyssey exhibit will highlight extinct animals that lived in Southern California and their living relatives, such as elephants, jaguars and California condors. The exhibit also focuses on conservation efforts to keep the animals of today from becoming remnants of the past.
