FILES-This file picture shows residents of the city of Augustow protesting on February 25, 2007 against Greenpeace militants who want to stop the construction of a highway through the Rospuda nature reserve near their northeastern Polish town. The European Commission announced on April 14, 2009 to give up the collision course against Warsaw regarding the Rospuda Valley highway plan -- which is just one section of the planned "Via Baltica" project to improve links between the Baltic states, Poland and the rest of the European Union -- since the planned start of road construction works in the Rospuda river valley has been put off. Following a controversial stretch of highway, and strong protests from several environmental groups, the European Commission had responded by beginning legal procedures against Poland to block construction.
