CHINA-ARTIST-QUAKE-ANNIVERSARY

TO GO WITH: Chine-s?isme-enfance-art,PREV by Francois Bougon

Chinese artist Ai Weiwei at his home in an arts district on the outskirts of Beijing on April 10, 2009.. The son of Chinese poet Ai Qing, who was denounced during the Cultural Revolution and banished to a labour camp in China's far northwest Xinjiang province with wife and child, Ai went on to study at the Beijing Film Academy with future film directors Zhang Yimou and Chen Kaige in the late 1970's and besides being a curator, architectural designer and a cultural and social commentator, Ai is perhaps best known for his role as artistic consultant for design in collaboration with a Swiss firm for the National Stadium, also known as thre Bird's Nest, for the 2008 Summer Olympics, a project from which he later distanced himself. His latest challenge is finding the names of all the children who died from the Sichuan earthquake in May last year, posted on the wall in front and to his left, while criticizing government efforts on his personal blog with angry postings for still not having provided a full accounting of the schoolchildren's deaths, which many have blamed on poorly constructed schools. For the past two days, Ai said each time he has posted the list of the children's names on his blog, they have shortly thereafter been removed. AFP PHOTO/Frederic J. BROWN
