INDIA-KASHMIR-ARTS-THEATRE
TO GO WITH "Lifestyle-India-unrest-Kashmir-theatre,FEATURE by Izhar Wani
A Kashmiri artist performs at a drama festival in Srinagar on March 18, 2009. With violence on the downturn, plays are making a comeback in Indian Kashmir, but with a big difference -- romantic dramas have made way for gritty scripts that tackle the region's troubles. After unrest broke out in 1989, Tagore Hall, the only theatre in the summer capital Srinagar, was turned into security forces' base, ending the venue's regular repertoire of traditional plays. Now actors are treading the boards again following a decline in separatist violence since India and Pakistan, who have fought two wars over the scenic Himalayan region, began a peace process in 2004.
