FRANCE-LABOR-MAYDAY
People take part in the traditional May Day demonstration on May 1, 2009 in Paris, as left-wing opposition leaders and all of the country's trade unions have called for marches to be turned into a "historic" protest to demand more help for workers and families hit by the slowdown. This year's May Day comes against a backdrop of mounting social tensions, with workers angry over lay-offs staging a wave of "bossnappings", and strikes hitting French factories, ports, universities and hospitals.
