European Union Foreign Policy Chief Javier Solana (L) talks with Bulgarian Prime Minister Sergei Stanishev on May 7, 2009 during the group photo of the participants of an EU-Eastern Partnership Summit in Prague. European Union nations gathered for landmark talks with six former Soviet states, aiming to foster stability without angering Moscow or offering anyone the hope of eventual EU membership. The main goal of the new Eastern Partnership is to "accelerate political association and further economic integration" between the 27 EU nations and Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine, according to a draft summit statement.
