BRAZIL-DROUGHT
A bank of the Uruguay river appears dry due to a severe drought on May 11, 2009 near the international bridge Agustin Justo/Getulio Vargas, connecting the Brazilian city of Uruguaiana and Argentina's Paso de Los Libres. Eighty-four cities in the state of Rio Grande do Sul are under state of emergency as the worst drought in 80 years is affecting southern Brazil, hitting also Argentina and Uruguay. Flooding that has left 44 dead in northern Brazil and the worst drought in eight decades in the south of the country are signs of climate change, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said Monday.
