ITALY-POLITICS-IMMIGRATION-LIBYA
Libyan naval officers (white uniforms) and Italian Guardia di Finanza (Border policeman) salute during the inauguration ceremony of the three new patrol ships donated by the Italian government to Libya, at the harbour of Gaeta in southern Italy on May 14, 2009. The Italian government donated the ships to fight illegal immigration from the African continent by sea. Italy has come under fire since returning around 500 boat people to Libya in a controversial new policy that was launched last week. In a deal signed in 2008, Tripoli agreed to step up the fight against illegal immigration while Rome pledged five billion dollars over the next 25 years as compensation for colonising the North African country.
