BULGARIA-MINORITY-COMMUNISM-HISTORY
Picture taken on May 19, 2009 shows Bulgarian ethnic Turk women praying in front of a mosque in the town of Dzhebel. Bulgaria's 10-percent Turkish minority marked this week the 20th anniversary of its uprising against the forceful assimilatory policies of the communist regime that eventually led up to its fall. Eight ethnic Turks were killed and dozens more injured in the May 1989 revolts when ethnic Turks demanded to get back their Turkish names, forcefully substituted for Bulgarian ones between 1984 and 1989.
