A masked member of Hamas's armed wing, the Ezzedine Al-Qassam Brigades, takes part in a demonstration in Gaza city on May 31, 2009 in protest against an attempt to arrest a senior Hamas commander in the West Bank town of Qalqilya. Six people were killed in the West Bank shootout, deepening the rift between the two main Palestinian factions. The gunfight erupted when Palestinian police dominated by Fatah loyal to president Mahmud Abbas tried to arrest Mohammed al-Samman, the commander of Hamas's armed wing in the northern West Bank, who was also on Israel's wanted list.
