US-SOLAR IMAGE-SUNSPOTS
This 28 October, 2003 Solar and Heliospheric Observatory image shows several giant sunspots crossing the face of the Sun. The most powerful solar flare in 14 years, a remarkable X18-category explosion, erupted from sunspot 486 early 28 October. An intensifying S3-class solar radiation storm is in progress. The explosion hurled a coronal mass ejection almost directly toward Earth, which could trigger bright auroras when it arrives on 29 or 30 October. X-class are major events that can trigger planet-wide radio blackouts and long-lasting radiation storms. S3 radiation storms can effect astronauts on Extra Vehicular Activity, and satellite operations. AFP PHOTO/NASA
