GERMANY-EU-VOTE-CDU-POETTERING
The President of the European Parliament and CDU candidate Hans-Gert Poettering waits for exit polls at the CDU party headquarters in Berlin during the European Elections on June 7, 2009. German Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservatives suffered around a six-percentage-point fall in their share of the vote in Sunday's EU election but with a clear lead, exit polls showed. Most EU nations went to the polls on the final day of European Parliament elections, amid fears of record low turnouts and gains for extremists as the economic recession blights the continent. Europe's Super Sunday will see electors from 19 nations including heavyweights France, Germany, Italy and Spain cast their ballots, as governments in Britain and Ireland reel from local elections held at the same time as their EU polls.
