GERMANY-EU-VOTE-CDU-POETTERING
The President of the European Parliament and CDU main candidate Hans-Gert Poettering offers flowers to German Chancellor and CDU chairwoman Angela Merkel one day after the European Elections on June 8, 2009 in Berlin. Angela Merkel's bid to win a second term in power in September was boosted as final European election results showed her centre-right party had trounced her Social Democrat rivals. Merkel's CDU party and the CSU, its Bavarian sister party, secured 37.9 percent of the vote while the centre-left SPD plunged to an all-time low of 20.8 percent, a performance widely described in the media as a "debacle."
