BRITAIN-AFRICA-G8-AID

Former Chairman of Microsoft and co-founder of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Bill Gates (L) is pictured with Archbishop Desmond Tutu of South Africa at the launch of ONE?s 2009 DATA Report, which tracks progress on the G8 promises to Africa made in Gleneagles in 2005, in central London, on June 11, 2009. Italy and France are so far behind on their aid pledges to Africa that they threaten to cause the entire G8 to fail to meet its targets, an advocacy group said Thursday. Ahead of a Group of Eight summit in Italy next month, One said the world's richest countries had delivered only a third of the extra aid they promised by 2010, despite being two-thirds of the way to their deadline. In its 2009 DATA report, presented in London, One -- set up by U2 singer and development activist Bono -- said Italy and France were responsible for 80 percent of the shortfall.
