An anti-terrorist police officer checks for evidence next to the the car with the body of the plain-clothes policeman who was shot dead in Athens early on June 17, 2009. At least two unknown assailants on a motorbike opened fire with automatic weapons on the 40-year-old policeman who was sitting in his unmarked vehicle outside the home of the witness. The victim was part of the police protection unit guarding the home of Sofia Kyriakidou, who testified in the trial of the People's Revolutionary Struggle (ELA) against her ex-husband Angeletos Kanas, a member of the group.
