NORWAY-BRAZIL-SOPHIE-PRIZE-SILVA
The Sophie prize 2009 is held by Marina Silva, senator and former minister of the environment in Brazil, after she was awarded with the prize in Christiania Theatre in Oslo, on June 17. The Sophie Prize of US $100,000 (about 72,000 euros) is awarded to an individual or an organization that, in a pioneering or a particularly creative way, has pointed to alternatives in sustainable development and put such alternatives into practice. According to the organization, Silva has, as activist, senator and minister, been dedicated to securing the largest and richest ecosystem on earth: the Amazon rainforest. Silva was Minister of the Environment in Brazil from 2003 to 2008. During this period she reduced deforestation in the Amazon to historically low levels - by 60% from 2004 to 2007. While protecting the rainforest, she also balanced the concerns of indigenous peoples? traditional farming societies. AFP PHOTO Heiko Junge / SCANPIX NORWAY
