Bush toured fire-scarred areas of California, hoping to soothe the "heartache" of the many who lost homes and communities to the flames. The president visited the disaster area as the death toll in the 15-day-old wave of fires rose to 24, with 3,582 homes destroyed and 3,000 square kilometers (1,200 square miles) of the state charred.
