PHILIPPINES-MUSLIM-UNREST
A contingent of Philippine marines stand at attention during a send-off ceremony at the navy headquarters in Manila on July 3, 2009 where they will be deployed to the island of Palawan, the headquarters of military western command replacing their colleagues who will be deployed to the island of Mindanao where the military is fighting Abu Sayyaf, a Muslim extremist group and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), a separatist group. The 12,000-strong MILF has been fighting for an independent Islamic state in Mindanao since 1978. It broke a five-year ceasefire with Manila in 2008, after a court outlawed a proposed agreement with Manila giving the rebels virtual control over a large areas in the south. AFP PHOTO/TED ALJIBE
