US Marines of 1st Combat Engineering Battalion of 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade search a compound in the Garmsir district of Helmand Province on July 12, 2009. Four US soldiers operating under NATO were killed in improvised bomb explosions in Afghanistan, military officials said July 12, as troops pressed a major assault against the Taliban in the south. Operation Khanjar (Strike of the Sword), involving nearly 4,000 US forces as well as 650 Afghan police and soldiers, would bring security to the Helmand River valley ahead of presidential elections on August 20, commanders said.
