AFGHANISTAN-UNREST-US-KHANJAR
US Marines of 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade do a controlled detonation of an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) found in a field in Nawa district in Helmand Province on August 1, 2009 during a mission to detect and destroy IEDs. About 4,000 US Marines are battling insurgents in a massive offensive launched in the south early June to clear Taliban militants out of strongholds ahead of presidential and provincial council elections scheduled for August 20.
