Wake served in the MP (Military Police) in Iraq in 2003-2004 and saw brutal conditions during battles there, and eventually was seriously wounded by a mortar shell in Najaf. Upon returning to Missouri, he'd found that his home had been foreclosed on and that he suffered from flashbacks, blackouts and difficulty concentrating, all hallmarks of PTSD. Wake often seeks solitude as a way of coping, and he lived alone for a few years in a trailer on the grounds of a local airfield.
