ST LOUIS, MO - AUGUST 10: Robert Wake, an Iraq war veteran suffering from posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), enters the Polytrauma ward in the VA Medical Center August 10, 2009 in St Louis, Missouri. The ward serves veterans with multiple war wounds; in Wake's case, a concussion and shrapnel wounds from an exploding mortar shell that hit him in Najaf in 2004, and also serious PTSD. Wake served in the MP (Military Police) in Iraq in 2003-2004 and saw brutal conditions during battles there, eventually returning home with a Purple Heart and other medals of valor. Upon returning to Missouri, he found that his home had been foreclosed on and that he suffered from flashbacks, blackouts and difficulty concentrating, all hallmarks of PTSD. Wake lived alone and without counseling for a few years in a trailer on the grounds of a local airfield; now he's seeking treatment and has recently moved into a new house. Posttraumatic stress disorder has been a major issue for American soldiers returning from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Chris Hondros/Getty Images/AFP
