INDIA-KASHMIR-IDAY-STRIKE
Indian Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) soldiers stand alert on a deserted street during a strike in Srinagar on August 15, 2009. The strike, sponsored by both hardline and moderate factions of the Kashmiri's main separatist alliance, cleared the streets of the summer capital Srinagar and shut all shops and businesses. Sharpshooters mounted machine guns and grenade launchers on the top storeys in Srinagar to keep vigil on Bakshi Stadium which will host a tightly guarded ceremony, the first to be attended by new Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. The venue has been attacked by rockets and bombs on past Independence Days, which separatists mark each year with a strike.
