KENYA-DROUGHT-FARMING
TO GO WITH AFP STORY BY FRANCOIS AUSSEILL -Kenyan farmers, hit by drought, relocate to slums-
Picture taken on August 16, 2009 shows a Kenyan man seated outside his hut surrounded by a thorn-fence that served as a kraal for his now dead cattle near Nanyuki town where a bruising and recuring drought has seen thousands of cattle invade the slopes at the foot of the mountain in search of pasture. Inspite of tick-bourne disease and drastic temparature drops at night in the mountain region that are decimating the stock herds, the herders continue to flock to the mountaneous region where slightly better pastures offer a chance of survival for both animals and herdsmen from the dought. Huge numbers of subsistence farmers from the area have practically been turned to begars, reliant on hand-outs to feed themselves and many of them, mostly women and the young, have already abandoned tilling their farms, in hope of rain, in favour of other income generating activities like breaking rocks at a nearby quarry where they for back-breaking, day-long work earn a paltry five Kenya shillings [6 US cents] for a 20 litre jerrycan of ballast.
