Aso, born into a prominent industrialist family, has long projected a tough, streetwise image, accentuated by his gruff demeanour and husky voice. Aso is the grandson of Shigeru Yoshida, one of Japan's most influential prime ministers who helped rebuild the country from the ashes of World War II, and he is married to the daughter of another former premier. The cigar-smoking 68-year-old who, polls suggest, may lead his long-ruling conservative party to defeat in elections on August 30, 2009, has also projected a vulnerable side, once confiding that life can be lonely at the top.
