German Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) and Thuringia's State Premier Dieter Althaus (CDU) wave on August 28, 2009 in Erfurt, during the last electoral meeting ahead of the state polls in the eastern state of Thuringia scheduled on August 30, 2009. Some 6.2 million voters will be called to the polls in the ex-communist eastern states of Saxony and Thuringia and the western state of Saarland.
