German Chancellor Angela Merkel addresses a press conference in Berlin on August 31, 2009 after a Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party leadership meeting to discuss the regional election results. The preliminary election results showed that Merkel's CDU were set to lose control of the states of Saarland in western Germany and Thuringia in the east of the country while holding on to power in Saxony.
