Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov delivers a speech to university students at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations in Moscow on September 1, 2009. Russia expressed fury over moves by ex-Communist states to equate Stalinism and Nazism, as historical wounds remained raw on the anniversary of the outbreak of World War II. Lavrov railed against "lies" and the "rewriting of history", in an article published in the government daily Rossiiskaya Gazeta to mark the 70th anniversary of the war.
