FRANCE-IRAN-POLITICS-DIPLOMACY

This combo of file pictures made on Septembre 23, 2009 shows Ali Vakili Rad (L), one of the three Iranians suspected of taking part in the assassination of a former Prime Minister of Iran Shahpur Bakhtiar in August 7, 1991 and 23-year-old French university teaching assistant, Clotilde Reiss, who was arrested at Tehran airport in Iran on July 1, 2009 on spying charges as she was about to leave the country. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on September 22, 2009 that Iran could not grant amnesty to Reiss unless France was willing to reciprocate with help on Iranian prisoners in France. Ali Vakili Rad was apprehended in Switzerland, as well as an alleged accomplice, and extradited to France for trial before being sentenced to life in prison in December 1994. Reiss, 24, was freed from a Tehran prison in August 2009 and transferred to the French embassy to await a verdict, after appearing in a televised mass trial. AFP PHOTO
