Conservative party leader and Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis sits during a press conference at Zapeion hall in Athens on October 4, 2009. Karamanlis tonight said he was stepping down as conservative party leader after a resonating electoral defeat at the hands of the opposition socialists. The Greek opposition socialists led by George Papandreou have scored a resounding victory with a 7.9-point lead in Sunday's general elections, early results showed.
