FRANCE-ERIKA-ENVIRONMENT-TRIAL-OIL
Corinne Lepage, lawyer of ten coastal towns which were damaged following the 1999 Erika shipwreck off the Brittany coast, answers journalists' questions, on October 5, 2009 upon arrival at the Paris courthouse on the opening day of the Erika appeal trial. The trial aimed at deciding whether Total and other parties bear responsibility for the massive oil spill from the Erika shipwreck polluting a large stretch of coastline and killing tens of thousands of seabirds. The Paris criminal court ordered Total and three other parties in 2008 to pay 192 million euros (284 million dollars) in compensation to civil plaintiffs in the case. AFP PHOTO / MARTIN BUREAU
