SOMALIA-VIOLENCE-IDP CAMPS
TO GO WITH STORY Somalia-unrest-displaced-UN Rapists, hunger and hyenas stalk displaced Somali women by Helen Vesperini
A Somali woman walks amid temporary structures in a camp for Internally Diplaced People (IDP's) in Hargeisa in the northern semi-autonomous state of Somaliland on October 20, 2009. Displaced women and girls of all ages, particularly those without husbands or fathers, are easy victims for rapists, either while they are fleeing or once they move into makeshift settlements. A woman who is known to have been raped will be systematically rejected by her male relatives and the whole community, leading many of the victims to keep silence. The northern regions of Puntland and Somaliland, with their relative political stability, attract tens of thousands of displaced, depleting still further the scant resources of sometimes unwelcoming local communities.
