SOMALIA-VIOLENCE-WOMEN-REFUGEES
TO GO WITH STORY by Helen Vesperini
A Somali woman holds a child in her arms as she stands near makeshift shelters in a camp for Internally Displaced People (IDP's) on a hill overlooking the city of Galkayo in the northern semi autonomous state of Puntland on October 20, 2009. The conflict in south and central Somalia is forcing Somali's to flee northwards with their children to safety ? a perilous week-long journey by truck that exposes them to armed gangs that assault them sexually and deprive them of their last few possessions. The northern regions of Puntland and Somaliland, with their relative political stability, attract tens of thousands of displaced, depleting still further the scant resources of sometimes unwelcoming local communities.
