TO GO WITH Japan-US-diplomacy-military-Okinawa,FOCUS by Harumi Ozawa
This picture taken on November 7, 2009 shows Japanese kayak guide Michiru Sakai showing the small tip of Henoko, part of Camp Schwab on the eastern coast of Okinawa, with a map of the Camp Schwab. For years, Sakai has shown tourists around coral reefs off Okinawa island -- and impressed on them why locals so bitterly oppose plans for a new US military base here. Opposition to the US military presence in Okinawa has simmered for decades, with locals complaining about aircraft noise, pollution, the risk of accidents and crimes committed by servicemen, especially a 2005 high-profile gang-rape case.
