APEC-SUMMIT-SINGAPORE
A Presidential Palace guard salutes Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama as he arrives for lunch in Singapore on November 14, 2009, for the start of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit. Leaders of the 21-member Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum representing more than half the global economy have opened annual talks. At meetings heading into the two-day summit, leaders including Chinese President Hu Jintao warned that resurgent trade protectionism risked choking off a nascent recovery after the world's worst financial crisis in decades. The APEC heads of government, who lead a total of 2.6 billion people stretching from the United States to impoverished Papua New Guinea, were expected to call on their officials to explore a Pacific-wide free trade area.
