GERMANY-AFGHANISTAN-DEFENCE-PARLIAMENT
German parliamentarians including Chancellor Angela Merkel (C) vote after a debate at the Bundestag, the lower house of parliament on December 3, 2009 in Berlin. Germany's parliament voted to extend its Afghan mission, but Berlin refuses to even consider backing a new US surge with more troops until after an international conference in January. Germany currently has around 4,300 troops in Afghanistan, the third-largest contributor to a 110,000-strong international force after the United States and Britain.
