ROMANIA-HISTORY-COMMUNISM-20 YEARS-CHILDREN
A Romanian social worker poses as disabled children play next to her at a orphange for disabled in Buzau city (100km east from Bucharest) on November 30, 2009. Romania counts around 70.000 abandoned children, among them 19,000 live in public institutions In December 1989, the collapse of Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceausescu revealed the plight of thousands of malnourished orphans locked away in filthy, unheated institutions. Twenty years on, Romania is striving to give a chance to its unwanted children. It is believed up to 200,000 children were living in state institutions in 1989. AFP PHOTO DANIEL MIHAILESCU
