ROMANIA-HISTORY-COMMUNISM-20 YEARS-CHILDREN
A Romanian youth shows a picture of him and his girlfriend a social appartment in Buzau (100km east from Bucharest) November 30, 2009. In December 1989, the collapse of Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceausescu revealed the plight of thousands of malnourished orphans locked away in filthy, unheated institutions. Twenty years on, Romania is striving to give a chance to its unwanted children. It is believed up to 200,000 children were living in state institutions in 1989. AFP PHOTO DANIEL MIHAILESCU
Ten social appartments in Buzau only shelters 69 youth and children in family type centers. Romania counts around 70.000 abandoned children, among them 19,000 live in public institutions. Almost 45.000 was taken in the family type centers as the rest are taken in care by tutors or NGO's driven centers. AFP PHOTO DANIEL MIHAILESCU
