FILES-IRAQ-TRIAL-KURDS-CHEMICALALI
(FILES)--A handout picture released by the Iranian official news agency IRNA shows Kurdish adults and children killed by an Iraqi chemical attack on the Kurdish village of Halabja in northeastern Iraq, 16 March 1988. On that day the Kurdish village was attacked by Iraqi jets that swooped over the village for five hours spraying it with a deadly cocktail of mustard gas and the nerve agents Tabun, Sarin and VX. An estimated 5000 people were killed. Ali Hassan al-Majid, better known as Saddam Hussein's enforcer "Chemical Ali" was on January 17, 2010, sentenced to death for ordering the gassing of Kurds in the Iraqi village of Halabja, Iraqi state television said.
