The new head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), Filippo Grandi of Italy, poses for a picture in Jerusalem on January 21, 2010. UN chief Ban Ki-moon appointed Grandi to lead the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), succeeding Karen AbuZayd of the United States with immediate effect. Prior to joining UNRWA, Grandi, born in 1957, served in a variety of UN headquarters and field functions ranging from refugee assistance, protection, emergency management, to donor relations and humanitarian and political affairs.
