VAIL, CO - JANUARY 28: Wounded U.S. Marine Capt. Ryan Voltin hugs his daughter Maya while taking a break from snowboarding on January 28, 2010 in Vail, Colorado. As a Cobra helicopter pilot, Voltin was seriously burned and lost a leg in 2007 when his gunship was fired upon in a friendly fire incident in Jordan. He was part of a group of a dozen war wounded and their families participating in the Vail Veterans Program winter ski retreat. The program is designed to help severely wounded U.S. military forces rehabilitate and rebuild confidence through learning to ski and snow board. Some of the wounded are flown in directly from the Brooke and Walter Reed Army Medical Centers. The visits to the Rocky Mountain retreat have been incorporated into the medical centers' rehabilitation programs for many troops who have suffered from traumatic injuries, including amputations, brain damage and other severe wounds, most of which sustained in combat in Afghanistan and Iraq.
