IRAQ-UNREST-SHIITE-SECURITY

An Iraqi woman (R), working with the police forces, searches the bag of a Shiite Muslim pilgrim at a checkpoint for pedestrians before leaving Baghdad on the way to the holy city of Karbala on February 2, 2010 to mark the Shiite mourning day of Arbaeen. A female suicide bomber blew herself up among a crowd of pilgrims, including many from neighbouring Iran, on their way by foot to the shrine city in central Iraq on February 1, killing 41 people including women and children. Around 30,000 members of the Iraqi security forces have been deployed to Karbala for the holy festival which culminates on February 5, marking 40 days after the Ashura anniversary that commemorates the killing of revered 7th century Imam Hussein, whose shrine is considered one of the holiest places in Shiite Islam.
