KOSOVO-SERBIA-INDEPENDENCE-ANNIVERSARY
A Kosovo Albanian child holds an Albanian flag in the town of Mitrovica on February 17, 2010 as Kosovo today mark the second anniversary of its unilateral declaration of independence from Serbia. Kosovo, an ethnic Albanian-majority province of Serbia, proclaimed independence unilaterally on February 17, 2008 in a Western-backed move seen as the final chapter in the bloody breakup of Yugoslavia. Belgrade was forced to relinquish Kosovo in 1999 after Serb troops were ousted by a NATO-led bombing campaign. After nine years under the administration of the United Nations, which still maintains a heavy presence, Kosovo declared independence but it was never accepted by Serbia which runs a parallel administration in the areas with Serb majorities.
