TURKEY-POLITICS-MILITARY
(FILES) A picture taken on August 30, 2009 shows Turkish soldiers marching during a military parade marking the 87th anniversary of Victory Day in Ankara. The arrest of senior commanders over a presumed plot to oust Turkey's Islamist-rooted government has left the armed forces, self-appointed guardians of the country's secular system, facing the biggest challenge to their authority. Once untouchable, the military has traditionally meddled in politics, ousting four governments since 1960, the last time in 1997 when it forced Islamist prime minister Necmettin Erbakan -- the mentor of current Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan -- to resign.
