Mathias Doepfner, chairman of German media giant Axel Springer addresses a press conference to announce the publisher's 2009 results in Berlin on March 10, 2010. He said that profits and sales dropped in 2009 but that it outperformed the overall market in an "extremely challenging economic environment." Sales dropped 4.3 percent to 2.6 billion euros (3.5 billion dollars), suffering from a "deep recession" in most of its markets and advertising spending falling "massively.".
