French Simone Veil, an Auschwitz survivor and the first elected president of the European parliament, poses as she leave the Institut de France after her entry ceremony as member of the prestigious Academie Francaise, the guardian of the French language, on March 18, 2010 in Paris. The 82-year-old Veil, a former French minister who ranks among the country's most respected politicians, is only the sixth woman to join the 40 "immortals". Veil's tattooed Auschwitz prisoner number, 78651, was also engraved on the sword that was presented to her by former president Jacques Chirac during a ceremony at the French Senate.
